EARI16-009: The potential use of native willows as a habitat management tool for building bee pollinator communities

Applicant: Bleuets NB Blueberries

Project Lead: Dr. Donald Peter Ostaff

Project Year(s): 2016 -      Status: Complete

Funding Source: Canada/New Brunswick Growing Forward 2 (Non-Business Risk Management Programs)

Funding Program: Enabling Agricultural Research and Innovation

Objective: To determine the potential role of native willow species in enhancing the native bee pollinator fauna associated with blueberry fields in northern New Brunswick.

Deliverables: Short-term Accomplishments: Year 1 - As soon as sites are accessible (mid to late April), plant 875 willow cuttings (5 clones x 3 species x 15 ramets per clone x 3 sites + 200 border plants). At the same time, set up and bait the bee traps. Sites were selected in the fall of 2015 with the assistance of John Schenkels. Ten days after traps are deployed, trap contents will be collected at all sites and sampling continued for a 10-day period during the second week of each month as stipulated in the Methods section. Processing and identification of bee specimens will begin in May and continue throughout the season. Long-term Accomplishments: Processing and identifying specimens will continue until species identification is completed by late January 2017 (for Year 1) and January (2018). A year-end report will be prepared during February and March 2017 and 2018, Year 1 and Year 2, respectively. Manuscripts reporting new records and any species new to science will be submitted during 2017, and later, depending on the difficulty of the taxonomic group.
