Objective:
Demonstrate and assess the efficiency of the WEREMCZUK brand JOANNA 4 model harvester on our farm for haskap harvesting.
Deliverables:
Improvement of haskap harvesting efficiency through better quality fruit, harvesting the fruit at the right BRIX level for each variety, faster harvest with less labour, and should provide better efficiency/profitability for harvesting operations.
Summary:
On-Farm Evaluation of the LITTLE BLUE-High Bush Blueberry Harvester for haskap. In comparison to the manual method, the harvest time per plant per person passed from 12.6 to 0.66 minutes/plant, while the quantity harvested per person per hour went from 0.95 to 27 kg. The labour harvest cost was reduced by close to 3$/plant with the mechanical harvester. However, the post-harvest loss were very high at 32% and some adjustments will have to be made to both the harvester and to the haskap plants to reduce the loss to an acceptable level.
